Check BOP Release Records

A Hinsdale County federal BOP release search applies when the person was sentenced to federal prison, not when the person simply left the local jail in Lake City. The Federal Bureau of Prisons locator can show a federal inmate's release date, current federal facility, or past BOP custody status. A Hinsdale County release record may still be needed when the local jail record says transfer, federal pickup, writ, or hold. Use the BOP result for federal prison custody, then use court, sheriff, or supervision records to understand what happened next.

Hinsdale County BOP Releases

The Federal Bureau of Prisons inmate locator is the public starting point for a federal prison release tied to Hinsdale County, Colorado. BOP says the locator covers federal inmates incarcerated from 1982 to the present. That scope is broad, but it is not a local jail roster. A person booked by the Hinsdale County Sheriff's Office may never appear in BOP unless a federal sentence or federal custody path exists.

This distinction matters in a small county. The official Hinsdale County Sheriff's Office pages reviewed for this build did not show an official current jail roster, 24-hour release list, or 72-hour release list. If a Hinsdale jail record says the person was released to federal custody, BOP may become relevant after sentencing and designation. If the person was released on bond, personal recognizance, time served, court order, or local hold release, the BOP locator will usually be the wrong system.

Important: A BOP release is a federal prison custody event. It does not confirm an ordinary Hinsdale County jail release unless the record shows a federal custody path.

Past BOP Release Date

BOP's about inmate records page gives a key rule for released federal prisoners. If the listed release date is in the past and no facility is shown, BOP says release occurred on that date and the person is no longer in BOP custody. That is the strongest public federal release indicator in the research file.

The caveat is just as important as the date. BOP says the person may still be on supervised release, parole, or in another correctional or criminal justice system. Federal supervised release is a court-imposed term after prison. It is not the same as being in BOP custody. A person could also be in state custody, local custody, or immigration custody after the BOP event. For a Hinsdale County inquiry, that means the BOP result answers only the federal prison piece.

BOP result What it means What to check next
Facility shown The person may still be in BOP custody at that listed facility. Recheck BOP and use federal court records if the sentence status is unclear.
Past release date, no facility BOP says the person is no longer in BOP custody. Check federal supervised release, Colorado custody, ICE, or local records if needed.
UNKNOWN release date BOP says the confinement term may not be determined. Check the federal case record or BOP records channels for more detail.

Note: Do not read "not in BOP custody" as proof that no court order, supervision term, hold, or new custody event exists.

Hinsdale Transfer vs Release

Hinsdale County research found no federal prison in the county. A federal case connected to the area would usually move through federal court, U.S. Marshals custody, and BOP after sentencing. The local release record is still useful because it can show whether the person left HCSO custody by bond, time served, transfer, federal pickup, or another agency pickup.

A transfer out of Hinsdale County custody is not the same as release to the community. The release reason or receiving agency is the field that prevents a false reading. If the sheriff's record says federal pickup, writ, hold, or transfer, search the federal path. If the record says bond, personal recognizance, court order, or time served, BOP may have no role at all.

Transfer
The person left one agency's physical custody for another agency. It may not be community release.
Supervised release
A federal supervision term after prison. It is not BOP facility custody.
Discharge
The end of a sentence or supervision term for the relevant case, depending on the system using the word.

Federal and County Records

For the federal side, use BOP first and then federal court or BOP records channels for more detail. For the local side, the Hinsdale County Sheriff's Office remains the source for the local booking and release record. HCSO lists its office at 311 N. Henson, Lake City, CO 81235, with mailing address PO Box 127, Lake City, CO 81235, business-hours phone 970-944-2291, fax 970-944-2744, and records email records@hinsdalecountysheriff.com.

A local request should ask for the booking and release record for the named person and date range. Useful fields include booking number, booking date and time, charge or hold basis, court case number, release date and time, release reason, and receiving agency if the person was transferred. If the federal path matters, ask whether the release record shows federal pickup, USMS custody, BOP transfer, writ, detainer, or another federal agency entry.

BOP, USMS, and ICE

BOP, USMS, and ICE answer different questions. BOP covers federal sentenced inmates and federal prison releases. The U.S. Marshals Service custody path covers many federal prisoners before BOP designation, including detention placement and transport. USMS does not provide a public person-by-person release locator like BOP. ICE covers immigration detention and is not a general county release list.

When a Hinsdale County release record names another agency, match the agency before searching. BOP is strongest after a federal prison sentence. USMS is more likely before sentencing or during federal transport. ICE is relevant only if there was immigration detention or transfer. Colorado Department of Corrections is a separate state system and should be used for Colorado prison or parole releases, not federal prison release dates.
